Kal Online assassin (PK) system: the mask, the two hour lock, and the item drop risk

Kal Online does not let you attack other players by default. The assassin system exists to discourage reckless killing, and it works by making the attacker opt in with an item. If you see a red name in the world, that player chose this.

How you become an assassin

You wear a mask item. The mask is an equippable item bought from the mask merchant at the Geum-Ohee fortress, and the official page notes that you cannot equip the mask while a bound item is equipped. The English guide lists the same merchant in the Temporary Fort of Geum-Ohee Castle and in the High Land of Sky.

Once the mask is on, your character name turns red and reads "assassin", and a mask is applied to your face. You get a warning message on screen when an assassin is close to you. Two commands control what the red name shows: /자객이름 공개 changes the red text to your own character name, and /자객이름 비공개 changes it back to the word assassin.

What you can and cannot hit
  • You can attack every other player except your own party members and guild members.
  • Assassins can attack other assassins.
  • You can only attack outside safe zones. Towns and some beginner hunting grounds are safe, and an icon appears in the upper left when you enter an unsafe area.
The two hour lock

Assassin mode cannot be turned off for two hours. Dying releases you from it early, because the remaining time disappears if you are killed or you suicide. You also cannot end your connection while you are an assassin.

The penalties
  • If you die in assassin mode you lose experience, but the death count is not accumulated.
  • If you are killed by another player or another assassin while in assassin mode, there is a 50 percent chance you drop one of your equipped items or an item from your inventory.
  • You cannot trade with other players, use shops, or set up a fish trap while in assassin mode.
  • You cannot apply to a guild or recruit to one while in assassin mode.
The town board

When an assassin is killed by another player, the kill is recorded on the town board. The board lists the assassin's name and the name of the character who killed them. It holds up to 50 entries and removes the oldest one when it fills up.

If you are the victim

A normal player killed by an assassin loses one tenth of the experience they would normally lose, and the death count is not accumulated. The attacker loses the full experience penalty plus the item drop roll, so the system punishes the attacker harder than the victim.

Frequently asked questions
  • Is this the same as a duel? No, the assassin system is separate from the duel (PvP) system, and it requires the mask item.
  • Can I take the mask off early? Not for two hours, unless you die.
  • Does the mask drop when I die? The 50 percent roll covers equipped items and inventory items, so it can.
  • Where do I buy the mask? From the mask merchant at the Geum-Ohee fortress, also listed in the Temporary Fort of Geum-Ohee Castle and the High Land of Sky.
  • Can I stay logged out while in assassin mode? No, the official page says you cannot end your connection while you are an assassin.
