Kal Online Texture Formats: DDS Files and Material Properties

Kal Online uses DirectDraw Surface (.dds) files for most of its textures. These files store image data in a format that graphics cards can read efficiently. Understanding the .dds format helps when you are creating or modifying skins and UI elements.

What Is DDS?

DDS is a Microsoft texture format designed for real-time rendering. Unlike PNG or JPEG, DDS files store data in a way that GPUs can use directly without decompression. This reduces loading time and memory usage.

DDS files can use different compression algorithms. DXT1 is used for textures without alpha channels. DXT5 is used for textures that need an alpha channel for transparency. The compression reduces file size significantly compared to uncompressed formats.

Kal Online Texture Structure

Kal Online stores its textures in .pk archives. These archives contain the .dds files along with other game assets. The game loads textures from these archives at runtime.

Each texture has a corresponding material file that defines how the surface appears in the game world. Material files specify properties like shininess, transparency, and texture blending modes. Changing a texture without updating the material file can cause visual glitches.

Creating Custom Textures

To create a custom texture for Kal Online, you need to match the original file's dimensions and format. Most Kal Online textures use power-of-two dimensions like 256x256 or 512x512. The game may not render textures with non-power-of-two dimensions correctly.

When saving a .dds file, select the same compression format as the original. If the original uses DXT1, save your replacement as DXT1. Mismatched formats cause the game to display the texture incorrectly or not at all.

Common Issues

Pink or black textures usually indicate a missing or corrupted file. The game cannot find the texture at the expected path, so it displays a placeholder color. Check that your file is in the correct directory and that the filename matches exactly.

Stretched or distorted textures happen when the dimensions do not match the original. Always check the original texture size before creating a replacement.
